Salt Dough Ornaments

Ever since I was a kid we always had Christmas traditions that I’ll forever cherish. Now, that I have children of my own. Cody and I decided we wanted to carry out some of those traditions with our own family. I’d like to take this time to share some of those things with y’all.

One of the things we did when I was a kid was make homemade ornaments. My mom still puts them on her tree every year. I think that is something that is just so precious and meaningful to look back on years later. To remember all of those special memories that were made with your family.

This year with our girls being older we decided to bring more of the traditions alive. We made some salt dough ornaments a couple of weeks ago. It was such a great time and the girls loved it! If you have kids, I highly recommend doing something like this with them. Even if you don’t and you’re a pet parent, make their little footprint and hang it on your tree for memories.

How to make salt dough ornaments.

Things needed:

4 cups Flour

1 cup Salt

1 ½ cups Water

Acrylic paint

Glitter

Ribbon

Directions:

Preheat oven 325 degrees

Take the flour, salt, & water; put it all into a mixing bowl.

Knead the dough for about 5 minutes to make sure it is all mixed together.

Roll dough out on wax paper.

Use cookie cutters of your choice to cut the shapes.

Poke a hole at the top with a straw so you can put ribbon through it to hang on the tree.

Grease a cookie sheet then put the cutouts on it.

Place them in the oven for 1 hour

Let them cool over- night.

Note: If the dough is too dry-add more water. If the dough is too wet- add more flour.

While the ornaments were baking the girls colored some Christmas coloring pages.

Once they are done cooling you can paint them I recommend using any acrylic paint and of course glitter.

If you use glitter be sure to sprinkle that on top of the wet paint so it can dry along with the paint and not worry about the glitter falling off. (Tip: tap any extra glitter off after you sprinkle it onto the ornament.)

After decorating the ornaments we let them dry for a bit then we let the kids put them on the tree wherever they wanted.

I hope you enjoy this fun little craft; I’ll share a few more traditions later on.

Hope everyone has an amazing Holiday season!!!
